You always read stories about people managing to get strange items lodged in their head and survive.

However, one US man took the biscuit after he accidently shot himself with a nail gun, leaving a three-inch pin in his brain.

Dante Autullo had been in his workshop when the incident occurred, but because it left only a small wound on the back of his head, he thought he'd had a lucky escape.

After taking a nap, the male started feeling nauseous and so decided to go to the hospital, where the doctors were left slack jawed.

Mr Autullo had come within millimetres of damaging his motor neurone functions, but surgeons were able to successfully remove the nail and insert a titanium plate to protect him.

He is expected to make a full recovery and maybe he'll think twice before trying out some DIY without the proper safety precautions in the future.
