A team of three men is to take part in a mammoth 2,000 mile rally to raise funds for injured soldiers.

Malcolm Middleton, John Robinson and Tom Hudson will trek across six countries in the space of 11 days to generate cash for the Help for Heroes charity, the Galloway Gazette reports.

The trio hope to collect in excess of the £2,500 required to enter next year's Help for Heroes 4×4 European Rally.

Mr Hudson served as an infantry soldier in Iraq in 2004 and explained the poignancy of the trip.

He stated: "The rally route pays tribute to the soldiers of the Second World War and follows the route taken after the D-Day landings."

The lads will be camping during the night when they are on the road and will have to learn to be self-sufficient if they are to complete the challenge.

Deputy governor of Kirklevington Grange prison Kevin Baker is to traverse the Himalayas in an effort to generate cash for the Help for Heroes cause, the Gazette Live reported.
