The recipe for a rippling set of muscles is simple – plenty of strengthening work and a healthy diet, a fitness guru has said.

Mitch Batkin, senior vice president at Sportandhealth.com, told the Washington Post’s Express blog that eating the right food is vital, because even the biggest muscles in the world won’t be visible under a load of fat.

"Strengthen them [muscles], and eat clean and lean," he stated.

Mr Batkin recommends that soldiers trim their body fat to around eight per cent so all the hard work put in at the gym can be seen by everyone.

While in the gym, the fitness guru says troops should combine cardio work with full-body movements to engage the core muscles, adding that the way to a super six pack is the bicycle exercise.

Peta Bee, a fitness professional, told the Times that the bicycle move is the most effective way of toning stomach muscles and said soldiers should avoid things like ab-sliders, as they aren’t worth the money.
