Over the Easter weekend, most of us were making the most of our chance to get away from it all and do something a little less stressful than normal life. However, for one group of daring criminals, the four-day weekend represented an opportunity to put together one of the most daring heists ever seen in the UK.

In scenes reminiscent to the George Clooney film Ocean's Eleven, the thieves clearly planned their attack on the world famous jewellery region of London, Hatton Garden, for a time when no one would be around for a few days.

And when they executed their heist, the job was clearly as meticulously planned as in the movie, with the criminals entering the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit Co, where many of the world famous jewellers from around the area store their most expensive items, via a lift shaft.

Once inside, they disabled the security system and then managed to break into the heavy duty vaults with cutters, before they were able to help themselves to safe deposit boxes. It is believed that they stole more than 300 of the boxes inside, although the value of what was taken has yet to be released.

Police are now investigating the heist, having only been alerted to the crime on Tuesday morning when those in Hatton Garden returned to work after the long weekend.

It is not the first time the safety deposit building has been hit, after a criminal posed as a customer in 2003 and emptied a number of boxes, stealing £1.5 million worth of jewellery. However, that crime did not have the sort of mystery and precision that will no doubt be associated with the latest heist for years to come. ADNFCR-2867-ID-801782830-ADNFCR
