Given the nature of the competition, most eating contest winners tend to be a little on the big size.

However, a Japanese man has gone against the grain and smashed the sausage-scoffing world record, despite being only 5ft 4ins and boasting bulging muscles and a six-pack.

Diminutive competitive eater Takeru Kobayashi – who currently holds four Guinness World Records for various consumption challenges – scoffed 110 sausages in ten minutes in front of a cheering crowd at the New York State Fair.

The 34-year-old explained he uses a special technique to ensure he is able to gobble down as much food as possible.

He revealed: "I extend my stomach by drinking a lot of water. Right before this contest I just drink three gallons of water in one minute."

Mr Kobayashi is an official brand ambassador for Hofmann – a hot dog maker from New York – and celebrated his achievement by flexing his muscles for the crowd.
