Single soldiers who are currently registered with online dating websites may be wise to ensure they post a flattering picture of themselves, as it has been suggested that in the internet environment, looks certainly do matter.

Researchers at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Essex found that singletons with plenty of options in the dating arena tend to choose those who are physically attractive, NPR reports.

One of the scientists who undertook the study psychologist Alison Lenton said people are more likely to make superficial judgements in the internet dating environment.

"The tendency to make choices based on appearance alone is exacerbated by online dating, where people can literally sift through thousands of photos and profiles," she explained.

Sree Sreenivasan, writing for DNAinfo, recently advised that single soldiers should take note that choosing the right display picture is a "critical" part of an online profile, with the photo having a massive impact on a potential partner’s perception of you.
