Liverpool's lord mayor Frank Pendergast showed his support for soldiers by joining a horse riding event in aid of Help for Heroes, despite sustaining an injury during training.

The official fell off his animal while taking lessons for the challenge, but he insists his aches and pains "pale into insignificance" compared with the tests facing members of the armed forces, the Liverpool Daily Post reports.

Once he had overcome his sore ankle, knee and hip, Mr Pendergast joined those involved with the 100-mile Trans-Pennine challenge on the last section.

"Help for Heroes is a fantastic charity and the people who are doing this ride deserve all the support they can get," the lord mayor said.

Gail Stanton organised the ride, as her son is currently on duty in Afghanistan and she wanted to show support for him and all his colleagues.

Ex-Royal Marine Commando Greg Pye was recently gearing up for his own mission in aid of the charity and preparing to take on the Three Peaks Challenge in honour of the organisation, Click Liverpool reported.
