Designers behind a billboard in India were guilty of a significant blunder recently when they chose to mourn the death of Nelson Mandela with an image of Morgan Freeman.

The former South African president died earlier this month at the age of 95 and a site in Chennai was chosen for a picture of the international icon to be displayed.

But when it came to putting up the tribute, workers lifted a depiction of Hollywood star Freeman rather than one of Mandela along with a loving tribute written below.

Freeman has some form for impersonating Mandela having played him in the 2009 film Invictus.

Following his recent death, he said: "Today the world lost one of the true giants of the past century."

Twitter users were bemused by the mix-up and were quick to point out the obvious error in showing Freeman in a tribute to Mandela.ADNFCR-2867-ID-801674810-ADNFCR
