The rising popularity of online dating has seen the activity make its way into a storyline in one of Australia's best-loved soaps.

Speaking to the country's TV Week magazine, actress Ada Nicodemou revealed her character in Home and Away Leah Patterson-Baker will look for love via the web after having her heart broken by a former partner.

Nicodemou explained Leah was encouraged to give internet courtship a go by her friend Roo, who said the experience would be "a bit of fun".

On the date, Leah – who is in an emotional state and has not eaten enough – finds herself drinking a little too much and winding up drunk.

Nicodemou said: "It's quite funny, as Leah is such a good person who very rarely lets her hair down and is not usually out of control like this."

The news comes after fellow famous face Sinead O'Connor revealed she is trying out online dating in an effort to find that special someone after the singer recently split from her husband.
