A 24-hour carp fishing match is being held at Welham Lake to raise money for Help for Heroes.

Simon Bangert, who used to be in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers before being medically discharged in 2004, has organised the event, the Scarborough Evening Times reports.

The 33-year-old collected £1,800 last year in the inaugural holding of the challenge and has set a target of £3,000 this time around.

"As an ex-soldier and former patient at Headley Court rehabilitation centre, giving something back and supporting our troops through an amazing sport is superb," Mr Bangert observed.

The British Army is set to take on a team of civilians as two sets of 12 anglers go head to head, while an auction, raffle and BBQ is also being put on.

Tackle, Carp-Talk, Carpworld, Nash Tackle and Crafty Carper are among the organisations that have thrown their backing behind the fundraising endeavour.
