Help for Heroes hopes that this week it will reach £100 million in funds raised since it was established.

The charity – which assists troops who have been injured while on duty – is close to the milestone and predicts the moment will come any day.

One of its high-profile backers is the Sun, which says its latest initiative will earn another £500,000 for the organisation.

Almost 300 cyclists started the 350-mile Battlefield Bike Ride yesterday (June 5th), which will see participants ride from Portsmouth to Paris.

Bryn Parry, founder of the charity, says: "As soon as the Sun got involved, Help for Heroes took off like a rocket.

"It was unprecedented and incredibly heartwarming to see the power and generosity of the British public."

A totaliser on the organisation's website shows some £98.07 million has already been raised, with £89.189 million of this amount spent on an array of projects and causes.
