The Help for Heroes charity is to receive a sizeable donation after a clay pigeon shoot was held to generate funds for the cause.

According to the Northern Echo, the event – organised by the Spennymoor and District Clay Pigeon Gun Club and held at West House Farm in County Durham – is expected to raise around £7,500.

The spectacle attracted about 250 people and the cash collected will be added to £3,500 raised by the group at an earlier sponsored shoot.

It was planned by Phil Bartlett, who spent 18 years in the service of the Royal Corps of Transport.

The 52-year-old said: "We have had a great year so far with great weather and there have been plenty of people putting money in the jar we have for Help for Heroes."

It was recently revealed media company GMG Radio is to raise cash for the charity by running a Help for Heroes Day next month, which will involve an 18-hour appeal.
