The need for speed was coupled with the need to support soldiers via a special weekend of racing at Donington Park.

Soldiers from the east Midlands, including troops from the Engineers, Royal Logistics Corp and Royal Signals and Queens Guardsmen, headed to the motorsports track as guests of car manufacturer Ginetta for a charity event.

They were raising money for Help for Heroes through several car races, shown live on ITV4 as part of the British Touring Car Championship coverage.

"Hopefully motorsport fans watching on TV will want to learn more about the amazing work Help for Heroes does for the Armed Forces," commented Colour Sergeant Lee Cope from the Royal Engineers.

Donington Park is the home of many motorsport events and has previously hosted Formula 1 and MotoGP events, as well as the touring cars and Renault World Series.

A more sedate fundraising event was held in Cambridgeshire earlier this month with a swimming gala raising money for Help for Heroes, the Wisbech Standard reported.
