A fundraiser is being held in Hebburn for the Army Benevolent Fund (ABF).
The event, which is a sell-out, is being supported by Irene and Les Tonge, who run a local florists shop, the South Shields Gazette reports.
Both of them have been in the army and are keen to collect as much money as possible for the organisation, which is looking to raise 100 per cent more than it currently does and take in £14 million a year by 2015.
Ms Tonge stated: "We would love people to donate homemade cakes, which we will sell in the shop this weekend, or any prizes to be raffled at the event itself."
She added the ABF does a "great job" in helping both current and ex-servicemen and women.
Ms Tonge continued by saying the local business community has already donated some brilliant prizes for the occasion.
The ABF has been providing assistance to troops since 1944.
