HMS Gloucester set sail for the South Atlantic six months ago to defend British territories in the region and, with the mission successfully completed, the ship is back home in Portsmouth in time for Christmas.

The vessel was deployed to support the Commander British Forces South Atlantic Islands and was the Navy’s lead presence, supported by HMS Clyde and RFA Gold Rover.

Also known as the Fighting G, HMS Gloucester was used to search for drug smugglers, survivors from a sunken trans-Atlantic airliner and to take part in military exercises in the region.

Commander Iain Lower, who steered the ship back home, said everybody on board deserves a big pat on the back.

"HMS Gloucester’s mission in the South Atlantic was to defend British South Atlantic Territories, deter aggression and ultimately defeat any opposing force required," he stated.

The ship is one of the last four of the class to be built and features a lengthened hull design to give better seakeeping qualities.
