A young woman who lost her soldier dad in a motorbike accident is undergoing a challenge to raise money for Scotty's Little Soldiers. Beth Wood, a 21-year-old student from Preston, is aiming to complete the 10km Rock Solid Race in Milton Keynes to raise funds for the children's military charity.

Scotty's Little Soldiers provides support, gifts and holidays to British youngsters who have lost parents who served in the Armed Forces. The charity helped support Beth through her grief when she lost her dad at age 15.

Beth's dad, Staff Sergeant Glyn Hole who served with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, passed away following a motorbike accident in 2010. Following her loss, Beth was put in touch with the charity, which helped her cope with her dad's death. She said that it was like joining "a family that all understand".

“It was [a] complete shock losing my dad, he’d served all over the world so losing him in a motorbike accident was just so unexpected," she told the Lancashire Evening Post.

“I cannot describe just how much Scotty’s Little Soldiers helped me and continued to help me.

“Little things like birthday gifts, a pizza voucher on Remembrance Day to holidays and even supporting me getting to university with a grant. I honestly believe I wouldn’t be the person I am today if it wasn’t for Scotty’s.”

Later this month, October 29th, Beth will attempt the gruelling race in her dad's memory. She'll be accompanied by her boyfriend, her mum and other members of the charity and volunteers. This is the second of Beth's fundraising attempts after previously completing the Glyn Walk, raising more than £1,500 in sponsorship when she successfully walked the 57km from Leicester to Coventry.

She has set a target of £300 for her latest attempt, but is also aiming to raise awareness for a charity that is close to her heart and helps those dealing with the loss of a forces parent.

Scotty's Little Soldiers was started in 2010 by Nikki Scott in memory of her husband Corporal Lee Scott with the aim of supporting grieving British Forces children.

Nikki told the news provider: “It means so much to me and the charity when our members choose to raise money for us. We wish Beth the very best of luck and can’t wait to see how she gets on. This year’s Rock Solid Race is our biggest fundraising challenge yet and we’re really keen for everyone to get involved and show their support for Scotty’s.”
