A golf fundraiser day held at Eccleston Park surpassed the target amount set by organisers.

It was hoped the event, which was part of a nationwide charity effort for Help for Heroes, would raise £1,000, but the collections totalled around £3,800, the Liverpool Daily Post reports.

Eileen Wray and Derek Wright, who was the day's organiser, also arranged for six soldiers to take part in the golf day and even demonstrate the equipment they use for bomb disposals.

Richard Burbridge, general manager at the course, said it was a "phenomenal effort" by Ms Wray and Mr Wright.

He noted: "Help for Heroes is a truly worthy cause and we are glad to be able to do our bit for the brave servicemen and women who have served overseas."

Karen Dickson, whose son is serving in the forces, has created a special greetings card for Help for Heroes.

The item is called The Flower of Hope and 100 per cent of the net profits will go to the charity, the BBC reported.
