The girlfriend of a soldier who was awarded with the Military Cross has explained how much she admires the heroic army man.

Corporal Paul Mather, who received the prestigious award from Princess Anne at Buckingham Palace recently, had led soldiers in Afghanistan despite suffering from shrapnel injuries.

According to the St Helens Star, girlfriend Lisa Flanagan said that the past 12 months have been "like a dream and a nightmare", but admitted that she is glad that the soldier has now been recognised for his bravery.

"I’m so proud, everyone kept coming up to him at the awards ceremony, saying they’ve heard about what he’s done and even thanking him. He was taken back by it all," she explained to the newspaper.

The BBC recently reported that heroic soldiers Captain Tresham Gregg and Lieutenant Sergeant Matthew Turall joined Corporal Mather in being presented with the Military Cross for their services in Afghanistan.
