People and businesses in Darwen have come together to raise a significant sum of money for Help for Heroes and the British Legion Poppy Appeal.

The Crown pub in the town hosted a special event last Sunday (November 10th) that resulted in more than £500 being added to the charities' coffers, reports the Lancashire Telegraph.

One of the highlights of the day was undoubtedly the tug of war, which saw serving and ex-military members go up against civilians.

Fear The Fallen played a special gig inside the pub and there was a raffle, with food and other prizes donated by the nearby Sainsbury's store.

Manager of the pub Martin Evans said he had decided to donate all of the money taken from cask ale sales, resulting in a final total of £522.60.

"This figure does not include money from collection tubs," he explained, adding: "The event was a great success and we managed to raise a tidy sum for two great charities."ADNFCR-2867-ID-801662530-ADNFCR
