People recommending online dating to their friends is contributing to the popularity of the medium, it has been suggested.

Jack Wills, public relationships director of panix.com, indicated more and more individuals are taking to internet courtship after witnessing the dating successes of their mates.

The industry expert said his company collected data showing memberships for the top dating sites swelled by 18 per cent last year.

He went on to note the firm believed hooking up over the web would be a passing trend, "something that will certainly grow to be much less popular five to ten years from the time it was initially introduced. Evidently, we have underrated it".

Singletons are continually finding out how simple – yet highly beneficial – using the internet can be when looking for love, Mr Wills added.

In a recent article for the Daily Sun, Bolatito Adebayo highlighted the success of internet dating by pointing out many marriages have their roots in the net.
