A former soldier is to cycle 600 miles in an attempt to raise funds for Help for Heroes.

Adam Thompson aims to travel from York to Paris by bike in November in the hope of generating around £5,000 for the charity, the York Press reports.

The 25-year-old spent five years serving as an engineer in the Royal Navy and said he wants to use the challenge to help him regain fitness following a period of illness.

“I’ve recently spent time in hospital after having my appendix out, so decided to set myself a challenge to get back my physical strength,” the York St John University student explained.

He will make the journey on a bicycle donated to him by sponsor York Cycle Works.

Staff at East of England Co-operative recently raised £39,000 during a special fundraising week, with the proceeds set to be split between Help for Heroes, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association Forces Help and the Colchester Garrison Welfare Fund.
