Army penpals may be hoping their correspondence lasts as long as a couple from Chesterfield, who celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary recently.

Jack and Kath Bradley have been married for 60 years and met when they began writing to one another in their twenties, the Derbyshire Times reports.

Now aged 89 and 86, the pair have a daughter, three sons, three grandchildren and a great-grandson.

They began writing to each other after seeing an advertisement in a magazine.

"After exchanging several letters, they decided to meet in Sheffield and it was love at first sight. A six-month courtship led to engagement," the news source notes.

Similarly, US soldier Richard Allen and his wife Marilyn fell in love after becoming penpals in their youth, the Jackson Citizen Patriot recently reported.

They wrote letters during World War II before meeting up in person and falling in love and enjoying a long and happy marriage.
