Army penpals may be inspired by the story of Joe and Doreen Chubb.

The pair are celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary and they had to overcome a number of periods of time without seeing each other, the Bridport News reports.

After initially being apart for most of the first year of their courtship, they kept in contact by writing to each other.

Mr Chubb was away as a flight sergeant in the Royal Air Force during the second world war, while Ms Chubb made officer's uniforms.

They tied the knot despite only meeting four times and are still as happy as ever.

A family party at the Egg Cup Tearooms in Swyre was thrown to mark the occasion, while both of them only stopped working on their farm last year.

Earlier this year, a woman called Kathryn Hodgins who used to write to another lady named Irene McWhinnie more than 60 years ago told the Rutherglen Reformer she would love to get back in contact with her.
