Members of the armed forces are staying in touch with mates through Facebook and other social networking sites like forcespenpals.co.uk.

So many troops are using these sites that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) is even encouraging them to talk about defence, although within its strict guidelines so they don’t give away any sensitive information.

"We know lots of our people have something good to add,. The armed forces are generally young, tech-savvy people and they’ve almost all been using social media to stay in touch with their friends and family," Robin Riley, the MoD’s head of online engagement said.

Folks back in Blighty are also using social networking sites to support soldiers and military personnel, with 12,000 people joining the Facebook group Support the Grenadier Guards in Afghanistan on Op HERRICK 11.

Troops could also use social networking sites to get some army dating going and boost their love lives, as research from CitySocialising found that ‘finding true love’ is the second-most popular New Year’s resolution for blokes.
