Those with army pen pals might be pleased by news that firefighters in Potter's Bar have done their bit for the armed services by washing between 70 and 80 cars.

The Blue Watch Crew took part in the fundraiser with buckets of soapy water and sponges, the Welwyn Hatfield Times reports.

Help for Heroes and The Fire Fighters will be the beneficiaries of the cash, which amounted to £500 for the car wash.

In addition, a further £1,300 was generated by participants standing outside Tesco's Mutton Lane superstore in the area, where members of the public bought wristbands and dipped into their pockets.

According to the piece, commander Paul Mapp was quoted by the Potters Bar Edition as saying: "We wanted to do something for Help for Heroes."

He went on to add: "Quite a few of the lads are ex-servicemen themselves, so it's a charity close to their hearts."

Meanwhile, the Oxford Mail recently reported on the story of a vintage car auction held on the banks of the Thames, which was organised in aid of Help for Heroes.
