Firefighters are usually associated with making death-defying rescues.

However, three fire engines and at least seven firefighters in Watford were called to deal with a slightly different situation – a distressed squirrel.

While the story may sound nuts, it is in fact true, as the squirrel was stranded in the middle of a pond in the town centre and was in danger of drowning until the brave men stepped in.

A passerby who spotted the squirrel decided the only rational course of action would be to dial 999 and see if Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue could launch a daring rescue mission.

Emily Sharman, who had been shopping when the incident kicked off, said: "I saw the fire engines arrive and thought there must be a big fire somewhere. I couldn't believe it when I heard they were going to rescue a squirrel."

If they take rescuing animals this seriously, you can only imagine how they would react to people being trapped in a burning building.
