An ex-soldier is set to take on a set of gruelling challenges this year in aid of Help for Heroes.

Richard Porter is now employed as a bus driver but previously held the role of army sergeant, the Nottingham Post explains.

He and his friend are preparing to cover more than 1,000 miles in their sporting tasts, which include a marathon, two triathlons, an endurance obstacle course, a bike ride from John O'Groats to Land's End and a 75-mile cycle sprint.

Mr Porter said: "Friends of mine are going to Afghanistan in November this year, which was more coincidental than planned, but it does make it a little bit more poignant."

He aims to raise some £50,000 for Help for Heroes over the next 15 years, when he will continue with his charity challenges.

Another member of the armed forces who is helping the charity is Michael Collins, who plans to raise funds for the organisation before he returns to Afghanistan, the Crewe Guardian recently reported.
