An ex-soldier has donated thousands of pounds of compensation to forces charity Help for Heroes.

Ron Skyrme, 56, suffered a range of injuries when he stepped in to halt an attack on one of his neighbours.

According to a report by the Daily Mirror, Mr Skyrme was awarded a fee of £3,175 as a result of the incident.

The ex-soldier stated that had he not decided to intervene, the two attackers would have killed his neighbour.

"People said I was a hero that day, but the real heroes are those guys on the front line in Afghanistan," Mr Skyrme said.

"The bigger picture is more important to me."

Earlier this month, it was reported by the Herts Advertiser that St Albans Polo club has raised a total fee of nearly £20,000 from a charity tournament, with the money going to Help for Heroes.

Organiser Clare Dingwall explained it was a great day of entertainment for a worthy cause.
