An ex-Royal Marine has raised £5,000 for Help for Heroes by taking part in a series of challenges.

Brian Tinnion, who is now a firefighter, tackled the Virgin Money Cyclone – the cycling equivalent of the Great North Run – the Three Peaks Challenge, hiked to Everest's base camp and cycled from Land's End to John O'Groats.

He told the Journal the events had given him the chance to get fit and raise some money for the military charity.

"Taking part in the Virgin Money Cyclone is a tough challenge for cyclists but is a great opportunity," Mr Tinnion remarked.

In recognition of his efforts to collect cash for the charity, the former military man was given the opportunity to be part of the Olympic Torch Relay.

Mr Tinnion observed this had been a great moment in his life and admitted to being "quite choked up" just before it was his turn.
