A former RAF Regiment aircraftman is taking part in the 2013 New York Marathon to raise cash for Help for Heroes (H4H).

Craig Richardson from Norfolk lost half his leg in an explosion in Afghanistan while he was on duty in 2008, but since then he has completed the 26.2-mile London Marathon and fundraised for the Norwich City Community Sports Foundation, the Eastern Daily Press reports.

Next year, his challenge will see him sponsor military charity H4H, which provides aid to servicemen and women who have been wounded at war.

Mr Richardson said he intended to only do one marathon, but is now aiming to achieve a time of less than five hours.

He added: "People warned me about this. They said: 'When you've done a marathon you'll want to do it again but in a better time'."

The soldier is being supported in his latest endeavour by his friend Paul Sandford, who has been involved in numerous events to raise money for service people and has helped Mr Richardson prepare for the race in New York next November.
