Lions might look cute and fluffy, but you only need to see one clip of a wildlife programme to learn they can be deadly beasts.

And this fact has come too late for one woman, who is said to have been attacked and eaten by one of the creatures in her own home.

Martha Nduta, from the Nyahururu district of Kenya, was killed by a lion that had escaped from a private ranch.

The attack was so ferocious that the only way of identifying the 58-year-old woman was by her ripped clothes and a shoe that was found at the scene of the incident.

Officials are searching for the animal, which left behind a skull and some bones before going on the run.

Rangers from Kenya Wildlife Service – which manages approximately eight per cent of the country's total landmass – are now on the hunt for the killer.
