Dating soldiers may wish to note that it might be wise to be totally truthful in online descriptions of themselves, as a new study has revealed that men are more likely to lie on internet dating websites.

The research, undertaken by Kansas communication studies professor Jeffrey Hall and published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, questioned more than 5,000 participants who were signed up to an internet matchmaking service.

Participants revealed that men were more likely to lie to women in the online dating environment, however, women were found to lie about their weight more than their male counterparts.

"What people lie about depends on what kind of people they are. For example, if you’re an extrovert, you might downplay the number of past relationships you’ve had because chances are you’ve had more relationships than an introvert," says Mr Hall.

Marriage and family therapist Melody Brooke recently told The 33 News that women are more picky than men when it comes to picking a potential partner on the internet.
