A disabled ex-army corporal has broken a world record in aid of the military charity SSAFA, it has been revealed.

Andy McIntosh, 42 from Strathaven near Glasgow, drove a mobility scooter from John O'Groats to Land's End in 16 days and eight hours – the shortest time ever.

He started on May 5th, and eventually went on to travel 1,000 miles, from John O'Groats to Land's End.

This meant that Mr McIntosh beat the current world record, which stood at 24 days and nine hours, by an incredible 8 days and one hour.

The record is currently being verified by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Mr McIntosh is originally from Manchester and shortly after leaving the army, he discovered he had a highly rare and inoperable vascular condition.

This means that his blood is severely restricted because many of his veins and arteries have disintegrated, which impede his ability.

His current challenge was carried out as part of a bid to raise donations for several military charities that have supported him including SSAFA, Poppy Scotland, ABF The Soldiers' Charity, Erskine and Soldiers off the Streets.

After completing his challenges, Mr McIntosh, said: "The last 16 days have been breath-taking for me' I have seen such amazing and varied scenery and met some remarkable people. My time on the road has gone so quick. I would like to thank everyone who has made this new world record possible especially TGA who loaned me the scooter, Klyde Mobility, Park's Motor Group, Yuasa Batteries, Interstadia and Maritime Transport."ADNFCR-2867-ID-801788962-ADNFCR
