It's a well-known fact that footballers earn a decent wage, so you'd think they could afford to spent just over £1 on a simple snack.

But allegedly Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is feeling less than flush, as he is said to have stolen a doughnut during a recent shopping trip to Tesco, the Sun reports.

According to the newspaper, he headed into his local supermarket and wolfed down a Krispy Kreme snack costing just £1.19 without paying.

After nibbling on the sweet treat, de Gea – who previously played for Atletico Madrid – had a quick look down the magazine aisle before leaving the store empty-handed but with a full tummy.

Eagle-eyed security staff noticed his move and took the goalie into their stop and search room for questioning.

"The security guards who monitor the CCTV watched two of them take a doughnut each out of the Krispy Kreme cabinet," a source is quoted as saying.

A Tesco spokesman confirmed: "A customer was spoken to by our security team and the issue was resolved."
