The opposite sex can be a mystery at times. Whether you are coming across a man who won't commit, or you think you are getting mixed signals from someone you are dating, then you're not the only one.

Or perhaps you've been on first dates which have turned out to be awkward, and you want tips on how to turn it around.

So how do you find out what is going on with your man without asking outright or seeming too eager or pushy?

Never overindulge

Resist the temptation to knock back three glasses of champagne on the first date. The last thing you want to do is give him the wrong impression or scare him off! Just take things slowly, and you can let your hair down when you both know each other better.

Another mistake that many women make is they invite a guy in after the first date. This is not recommended at all. Your date is likely to wonder whether you do this for every man you meet, or he may not take you seriously as a potential 'girlfriend'.

Rather, you are likely to be placed firmly on the 'bit on the side' or 'sex buddy' category.

Being too eager

Ladies, save the marriage proposals and 'I love yous' until you get much further on down the line.

All it will do is scare the guy off. Instead, it is much better to retain a little mystery, and remain confident and comfortable in your own skin.

Similarly, keep your cool and don't call him every five minutes. If he is interested, he will usually call you soon after you have met. 

However, if you keep pestering him, you may come across as desperate or possessive, which will set his alarm bells off.

Furthermore, if you expect a guy to commit too early, then again, he is likely to run for the hills.

A lot of guys like to buy their partner a drink on the first date, or a meal. However, if you never offer to pay your share, or it becomes an 'expectation' then the guy is likely to think you are a gold digger.

Don't make him the centre of your world

Guys are much more likely to be attracted to a woman who has a life that does not just revolve around him.

Therefore, continue to hang out with your friends, go for meals and do your thing. A man likes his own space, and if there is chemistry between you, you will eventually start doing those things together.

Leave out the ex

There is nothing that is likely to send a man running more than a woman who is constantly putting down her ex.

All it will do is make you seem bitter and jaded, and is unlikely to give a good impression.

Instead of bringing the baggage with you, show an interest in him and move on.
