A father from the Isle of Man who was taken ill recently has thanked the Ministry of Defence (MoD) for getting his soldier son back from Afghanistan quickly to be at his bedside.

Peter Doyle collapsed with internal bleeding and was rushed to hospital, iomtoday.co.im reported, with his son by his side just 24 hours later.

His wife Wendy called the MoD so they could get a message to Steven, a gunner with the Royal Artillery Regiment.

"I’m gobsmacked and very pleased at the response by the MoD … they really deserve praise for this. I want to thank them for their speedy reaction. I could not believe how fast it was. Within 24 hours he had arrived back on the island," Mr Doyle told the news provider.

The MoD recently revealed the new Army Recovery Capability initiative will include educational, occupational and welfare support for soldiers returning to duties or to civilian life.
