Cycling can be a dangerous sport and there have been some serious crashes in events such as the Tour de France.

The speeds riders can get up to means that even the slightest collision could spell danger.

However, one South African racer got more than he bargained for when traversing through a course in Albert Falls Dam in KwaZulu Natal.

Evan van der Spuy was hit by a sprinting red hartebeest buck as he competed in a competition.

A video was taken by his friend Travis Walker and shows the 17-year-old being clattered by the mammoth beast.

Amazingly, Mr van der Spuy emerged relatively unscathed with only a sore neck, although he was initially knocked out by the coming together.

"I remember seeing the buck very close, but it happened too fast; there was no reaction time. The next thing I remember is being in the ambulance," he told the Mercury.
