A couple has raised over £10,000 in one year for Afghan Heroes.

Shaun and Michelle Lowden took the decision to support the armed forces charity when they discovered no one in their area was raising funds for it, the Grimsby Telegraph reports.

The couple – whose son is in the Royal Navy – stationed collection points in 16 businesses and held a number of raffles.

"A lot of people are so supportive of what we are doing and that makes me feel so proud. We are proud of the guys and girls out there," Ms Lowden observed.

Afghan Heroes – which seeks to provide help to those serving in Afghanistan – was set up in 2009 by mothers who had lost their children to the conflict.

Founder of the organisation Denise Harris said the help they have received from the Lowden's in Lincolnshire has been brilliant, adding it has been "amazing".
