Council workers in Weymouth and Portland in Dorset have been showing their support for troops in a team charity fundraiser.

The Barrel Challenge saw teams transfer an empty beer barrel from the Jail Ale Brewery at Princetown, Dartmoor to the Kings Arms in Weymouth, View Online reported.

Any legal method of transport could be used so the borough council lent a mini road sweeper for the task, which raised money for Help for Heroes and M V Freedom.

It took two days to complete the challenge – with an overnight camping stop – and the finale was a barrel roll on the Weymouth harbourside.

A fire engine and quad bike were also employed to help transport the barrel.

This weekend, a more sedate fundraising activity takes place in Newmarket to raise funds for Help for Heroes.

The Bandits Golf Society from the Kings Head public house has organised a golf competition in aid of Help for Heroes, the Newmarket Journal reported.
