Footballer Connor Wickham took to Twitter this week to show his support for Help for Heroes, which ended in him pledging a sizeable donation.

The Sunderland striker, who is on loan at Sheffield Wednesday at the moment, told his followers on the social network that he would donate 10p to the charity for every retweet of a post between 10:00 and 11:00 GMT yesterday (November 11th).

His message was subsequently retweeted 17,300 times, meaning the sportsman will now pay £1,730 to the good cause.

Wickham later took to Twitter again to reveal his delight at the outcome, calling 17,300 retweets an "amazing" result.

He had earlier shown his support for the military in another post on the site, writing: "11th minute of 11th hour on 11th day of the 11th month #payRespect @HelpforHeroes."
