According to research by Gocompare, com 17 per cent of people have seen their sex lives go down hill because of the big freeze, with nearly a fifth of Brits complaining that they enjoyed nookie less than once a week over the winter period.

More than half took more blankets to the bedroom, with a further 52 per cent donning pyjamas or sleepwear before catching 40 winks.

Mark Greening, head of utilities at the price comparison site, said: "It seems the cold weather has meant many of us have been reduced to hibernating under the duvet and putting extra layers on rather than stripping off."

Paula Hall, sexual and relationship psychotherapist at Relate, recently stated that couples need to make sex a priority and that both need to feel sexually self-confident if they want fireworks between the sheets.
