A Chinese man has hit the headlines after it took him two years to realise his dogs were in fact, black bears.

Banana farmer Wang Kaiyu brought what he thought were two puppies during a trip to Vietnam in 2013.

Despite the distinct lack of barking, Mr Kaiyu raised the cubs happily until 2015 in his home in Yunnan Province.

He described his 'dogs' as well-behaved, with large and curious appetites, but never once figured out that all was not as he thought it was.

Nearby neighbours who knew the creatures said they were especially friendly with people and that Kaiyu would groom them every day.

However, problems came when according to Kaiyu, his 'dogs' started behaving strangely.

They began to snack on local chickens and harass pets in the area. The penny only dropped for Kaiyu when he came across a leaflet regarding endangered animals from the local Public Security Bureau.

It was then that he realised that his adorable 'dogs' were..not canines at all, and were in fact a Category 2 protected species.

He then turned his pets over to the authorities and took the animals to the Yunnan Wild Animal Rescue Center.

It has since been reported that the bears are  in good health and will soon be rehomed.

At the moment, it is unclear whether Kaiyu will face any charges for possessing the animals.

However, had he continued to have kept them, they could potentially have become quite dangerous, as they can grow up to 300 pounds and are notoriously more aggressive than black bears in America.ADNFCR-2867-ID-801794319-ADNFCR
