Cheryl Cole is showing her support for soldiers by flying out to Afghanistan to meet troops on duty there.

The Girls Aloud star and solo singer is taking part in the Daily Mirror's Pride of Britain Awards by making the trip to Camp Bastion in Helmand Province.

A source is quoted by the news source as saying: "Cheryl's amazed by the courage of all those serving our country … She thinks it’s such a great cause and they deserve all the recognition they get."

Cole took a military flight from RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire and is said to have been issued with a protective helmet and body armour in preparation for the mission.

A soldier told the news source the troops are heartened by the move and were shocked when they learned the singer – who has had hits such as Fight for this Love and Parachute – would be joining them.
