Most soldiers would get a slap across the face if they were ever caught cheating on their wives, but a French psychologist says they should be thanked as they could be doing their marriage a favour.

According to bestselling author Maryse Vaillant, having a bit on the side is a sign of a healthy marriage and infidelity is unavoidable in for a lot of blokes.

In her book Men, Love, Fidelity, she claims that nearly 40 per cent of chaps in France cheat on their wives but it isn’t because they don’t love them, it’s just because they need something else.

"Most don’t do it because they no longer love their wives. On the contrary, they simply need breathing space. For such men, who are in fact profoundly monogamous, infidelity is almost unavoidable," she writes.

According to a study spanning 15 countries by the University of Otago in New Zealand, getting married can lower the risk of soldiers developing mental health problems like depression and anxiety.
