Help for Heroes – which supports soldiers who have been injured on duty – has received backing from organisers of a charity polo event.

St Albans Polo club hosted the special day in honour of the body and is thought to have raised over £18,000, the Herts Advertiser reports.

Polo for Heroes involved local and forces teams getting on horseback and playing in a series of matches, along with other activities such as a silent auction and a specially-cooked meal.

Clare Dingwall organised the occasion – which is in its second year – and welcomed special guests from the armed forces and sporting world.

She said: "It was a fantastic day with some great polo and some great entertainment for the whole family – and all of course for such a worthy cause."

Ex-world middleweight boxing champion Steve Collins captained one of the sides and said the "true heroes" of the day were two soldiers who had been seriously wounded in Afghanistan.
