A number of celebrities have lent their support to servicemen and women who were injured while fighting for their country.

Actress Bev Callard – who played Liz McDonald in Coronation Street – and comedians Richard Gadd, Stuart Mitchell and Gary Skyner were among those who attended a charity supper in aid of Help for Heroes, the Leader reports.

The event was hosted by war veteran Simon Weston, while entertainment was provided by Manchester-based bands The Birettas and The Tomahawks.

An auction was held, which saw the lucky winner bag a week in Spain – and a dress once worn by Callard also went under the hammer.

Speaking of the difficulties facing today's soldiers, Mr Weston noted: "They fight abroad and then they have to come home and fight for things like a home or a job and it's not fair."

The BBC recently reported that Colin Kirby-Green, whose father was a World War II prisoner of war, is aiming to raise £10,000 for the British Legion and Help for Heroes through a biking challenge.
