How much would you be willing to pay for a brown paper bag?

Unless it is £185, then you are not going to be interested in the latest accessory from German fashion designer Jil Sander.

She is seeking to give the item – which was first displayed back in January on the catwalk – a couture makeover.

Despite the staggering price tag, sales have been very good and stores are starting to run out of the bag.

However, it is not the first time Ms Sander has turned an everyday item into a must-have accessory, as her acetate shopping bag sold out in spring/summer 2011.

This highlights how people are willing to buy anything that has a designer label, regardless of how useful or practical it is and anyone who feels like treating themselves can get a leather version for around £500.

It begs the question what will be next in line for the high-end fashion treatment, perhaps a black bin liner as a jacket?
