Online dating could become increasingly popular, as the amount of time people spend on the internet is on the rise.

According to research from uSwitch.com, the average Briton spends 50 hours each week on the web, which is an increase of 20 hours from 2009 figures.

Some four hours are allocated to work purposes each day, while almost five hours are devoted to pleasure.

Technology expert Ernest Doku comments: "These figures show just what an impact the internet has had on our lives.

"It's become such a life essential that it's very hard to imagine how we would cope without it."

Youngsters are even admitting they prefer touchscreen technology to meeting people face-to-face, Mr Doku adds.

Research from esure – entitled Square Eyes – published in May revealed some 61 per cent of Britons believe they would have withdrawal symptoms if they were denied access to the web and other digital devices.
