While a head shot in most computer games means instant death, the same cannot be said for a teenager in Florida who was blasted in the face with a harpoon.

Yasser Lopez somehow survived the incident with no blood vessels in the brain being damaged, even though the spear pierced his forehead above the eye and emerged out the back of his skull.

X-rays showed the large weapon penetrated right through his brain – yet he appears to have escaped with few lasting injuries and is recovering in the Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Ross Bullock, a neurosurgeon at the facility, said it was important people had not been tempted to try and remove the pole prior to Yasser receiving medical assistance, adding it is incredible the lad's brain had not been damaged further.

Dr George Garcia stated: "It's a striking injury, something you don't see everyday – a patient arriving awake and speaking with a three-foot spear through his head."
