Service charity Blind Veterans UK is encouraging people to participate in the upcoming Cardiff Half Marathon for its cause.

Applications are currently being accepted via the charity's website for a number of spots in the race that it has.

The charity has a total of 20 such spots on offer for people who apply, with each coming at a cost of £20 for the participant, who should raise at least £250 in sponsorship when they use the place. The race is set to take place on October 5th this year.

"We'd like to hear from anyone who is looking for a guaranteed place in the Cardiff Half Marathon – or anyone who has a place but hasn't yet chosen a charity," explained Victoria Marshall, events officer for Blind Veterans UK.

She said that the charity will give runners support such as a branded running vest as well as assistance. People taking part for the charity will also know that the cash they bring in will change the lives of ex-service people who are blind, she said.

The charity has spoken to Catherine Currier from Cwmbran who did the half marathon for Blind Veterans in 2013 and is urging people to take part in 2014.

The 43-year-old NHS Wales administrator said she recommends that anyone who has an interest in running participates in the race for Blind Veterans UK.

"I was inspired to support the charity after learning they have a centre in Llandudno that provides support for veterans in Wales," she said.

Ms Currier said that she had fun during the race, that it is well organised and she was overwhelmed by the crowds' support. She also said that she saw Cardiff from a different angle by running.

Luckily, the majority of the route is relatively flat meaning she was able to enjoy the city's beauty even though the challenge was tough, she said.

According the official half marathon website, the race is going to end at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and 22,000 people have been predicted to participate.

There's also the chance to register for the half marathon via the official website for those who wish to do so.ADNFCR-2867-ID-801742221-ADNFCR
